Tips for Sleeping With Sciatica

Sciatica results from injury or pressure to the sciatic nerve. People who suffer from sciatica deal with numbness, weakness and pain. The intensity of pain varies from person to person, and there are many causes of sciatica. Common causes include an inflammed muscle, a fall or a spinal misalignment.

Sciatica pain can be continuous, with a worsening of symptoms at night. This increase in pain can interfere with the ability to sleep through the night. Fortunately, there are tips to help people with sciatica sleep.

1. Stretch the affected side. If you're unable to sleep due to pain, ask your doctor about specific related stretches that may help you sleep through the night.

2. While lying on your back, position a pillow under your knees. This can reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve and relieve pain.

3. Avoid sleeping on your side. While this is a comfortable position for many people, sleeping on your right or left side can pull on the nerve and increase your pain level.

If the pain persists, make an appointment and come visit Dr. Snyder, treating sciatica is one of his specialties.  Dr. Snyder is a Tulsa chiropractordedicated to getting you pain relief, when you need it!
