Getting Through the Day With Low Back Pain

Low back pain can be brutal, and if your condition is chronic, pain can significantly impact your life. There are numerous remedies for low back pain, but finding the right relief can prove challenging. Some people enjoy a measure of relief by applying ice to the lower back, whereas others need to lie down and rest.

If you need a fast, effective remedy, here are a few tips to help you get through the day.

1. Sit as little as possible. This is easier said than done, especially if you drive or sit at a desk for a living. Avoid soft cushions and take frequent breaks to stretch your back muscles. Select a chair with good lumbar support.

2. Quit smoking. Unknown to many, smoking cigarettes can contribute to low back pain. Smoking reduces blood flow to your spine, which can trigger intermittent or chronic pain.

3. Take a vitamin supplement. A calcium or vitamin D deficiency can weaken your bones and contribute to pain in your lower back.

4. Avoid swimming. While swimming is an excellent low-impact workout, this exercise can overstretch the back muscles and cause low back pain.
