Chiropractic: Cost-Effective for the Management of Musculoskeletal Conditions.

A systematic review utilizing data from 25 published studies compared the cost-effectiveness and/or cost-utility of manual therapy to alternative treatments for reducing pain. The review found an economic advantage for manual therapies relative to other treatments used in the management of musculoskeletal conditions. This finding indicates that some manual therapies -- such as spinal manipulation performed by a Chiropractor -- are more cost-effective than usual general practitioner care, spinal stabilization, advice to remain active, or brief pain management for improving low back and shoulder pain/disability. Chiropractic manipulation was also found to be less costly and more effective to treat neck pain than either physiotherapy or general practitioner care.
